MEDICAL technology company BD Diagnostics is sponsoring the Manufacturing Business of the Year Award – for the fourth year running.
The Roborough-based firm was named Plymouth’s top manufacturer at the 2013 Herald Business Awards and has since then supported the category.
It won in a year in which it invested £9.5million into building a steriliser unit which enabled the firm to double production.
Manufacturing director Mike Syrett said: “BD is proud to sponsor this award, which recognises the most innovative, forward-thinking, customer-focused manufacturers who have a strong commitment to the city of Plymouth and the surrounding region.
“These are values which we as a business share.”
BD, whose Plymouth base is on the Belliver Industrial Estate, is a leading medical technology company which partners with customers and stakeholders to address many of the world’s most pressing and evolving health needs.
BD-Plymouth first became operational in 1981.
Starting with a single building employing about 80 associates, it now employs more than 600 people.
Today, the 27-acre site on the edge of Dartmoor National Park is regarded as one of Plymouth’s premier manufacturing facilities.
The Plymouth plant manufactures a broad range of urine and blood collection products, used every day to help in patient diagnosis and treatment around the world.
Products made here are for use in markets across Europe and further afield, exporting products to Japan and China.
Mr Syrett added: “Our innovative solutions are focused on improving medication management and patient safety, including enhancing the diagnosis of infectious diseases and cancers and supporting the management of diabetes.
“We are more than 60,000 associates in 50 countries who strive to fulfil our purpose of ‘Advancing the World of Health’ by continuously improving the quality, accessibility, safety and affordability of healthcare around the world.”
